Fewer Murders In New York City On Rainy Days

July 3rd, 2009 · No Comments

An analysis of homicides and rainfall in New York City over the past 6 years appears to show that rainy days in the summertime are associated with fewer murders.  It showed that on non rainy days there was an average of 17 killings every 10 days.  However when there was substantial rain, killings dropped to 14 every 10 days.  This was even more obvious on Saturdays, which usually record the greatest number of killings at about 24 every 10 Saturdays.  Rain brought this figure down to 18.

The explanation for these figures is quite simple, I think.  When it rains, it’s just too damn wet for people to think of murder.  Unless you have got a real grudge against the guy you kill, being caught in the rain while you are doing your thing is just too much bother.
