Would You Drive To Work?

July 5th, 2008 · No Comments

Okay.  Would you drive to work if the distance between your home and workplace were less than a brisk 5 minutes walk?  In this age of escalating fuel prices, only a person with problems walking or with more money than he could possibly handle would probably do just that. Not for him the risk of exposure to the elements like the rain, road dust, or snow, or being run down by another car.  Playing a minor, but perhaps significant, part in not contributing to pollution and helping green the earth would probably be the furthest thing from his mind. But what the heck, what’s a couple of hydrocarbons here and there?

In connection with this theme of greening the earth, the city of Malmo in southern Sweden has organised a campaign to reduce dependency on car traffic and encourage cycling.  And as part of this campaign, it has awarded a bicycle to the person who in their eyes may have committed a mortal sin and done just what they have been railing against.  Lasse Jonsson has now gained notoriety as the man who has done the “most ridiculous commute” because he insisted on driving 200 meters to work from his home.  Ahem.  Good work, Mr. Jonsson.
