Breastfeeding Moms Fight Facebook

January 5th, 2009 · No Comments

Breastfeeding moms are now united over a controversy at Facebook, a social networking site. Generally, 3 out of 4 women try to breastfeed their newborn.  Which is a good thing to do, as this promotes healthy growth of babies, and also promotes a closer psychological bond between mother and child.

However there is a lot of debate over whether these breastfeeding moms should be allowed to do it in public or how much of the breast one can show when breastfeeding.  In the past few months Facebook has banned several pics posted by mothers on this social site of them breastfeeding because, in Facebook’s opinion, some of breastfeed pics are inappropriate or obscene, and do not conform to their rules on nudity.

This has not gone down well with quite a few mothers who feel that breastfeeding is a completely natural process and there is nothing obscene about it.

In a response to Facebook’s ban, 11,000 mothers held a virtual nurse-in by posting pics of themselves breastfeeding.

The “Hey Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene” Facebook group formed to try to pressure Facebook to change its rules now reports more than 100,000 members.

Breastfeeding is not an act of nudity.  A breastfeeding photo is a family photo of a mother nursing her baby.  There is a difference between a breastfeeding (nursing) photo and a sexual photo meant to turn on the viewers sexually.  However it is true that there will be people who are turned on by the sight of a mother nursing her baby.

Where does one draw the line here?
